SiriusXM’s Newest Satellite Aces In-Orbit Test

Radio+Television Business Report
3 years 10 months ago

The SXM-8 satellite has completed in-orbit testing and has been handed over to SiriusXM.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the satellite into space on June 6 from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

SXM-8 is the ninth high-powered, digital, audio radio satellite built by Maxar Technologies for SiriusXM.

Built on Maxar’s 1300-class platform and designed to provide more than 15 years of service, SXM-8 is more than 27 feet tall and weighed nearly 7,000 kg at launch. SXM-8 has a large, mesh, unfurlable reflector almost 30 feet in diameter that will allow SiriusXM programming to reach its radios, including those in moving vehicles.

“We are proud of our long-standing relationship with SiriusXM and excited to see SXM-8 ready for service to bring entertainment to millions of SiriusXM subscribers,” said Chris Johnson, Maxar’s Senior Vice President of Space Programs Delivery. “The entire Maxar team is committed to excellence, and playing a role in the success of our customers’ missions is what drives us every day.”

SXM-8 will provide continuous delivery of SiriusXM’s audio entertainment and information services to consumers in the United States and will expand SiriusXM’s coverage area in Canada and the Caribbean.

Importantly, SXM-8 will extend the health of SiriusXM’s satellite fleet and its satellite-delivered services through at least 2036.

Secrets to Super-Serving Your Audience

Radio+Television Business Report

Podcasting. It’s audio’s hottest platform as it continues to capture the ears of listeners and the attention of advertisers. And that includes Hispanic and Latino ears. A lot of ears!

According to Nielsen Power Buying data, 41% of U.S. podcast listeners are non-White with Hispanics gravitating to podcasts more than any other ethnic group. They also represent growth rate of 6x, well above the 4x rate among Whites.

How can Hispanic radio take advantage of this exploding audio platform?

Popular MSNBC American Voices weekend anchor and host of Latina to Latina podcast Alicia Menendez kicks off the 2021 Hispanic Radio Conference in a one-on-one chat with Jesus Salas, EVP of Programming and Multi-Platform Coordinator at Spanish Broadcasting System, that will deliver some of the answers.

They’ll discuss what building Latina to Latina, which launched in 2018, has taught Alicia about underserved audiences, the value of inviting listeners to be collaborators, and what it takes to reach a milestone like 1 million downloads. What she’s learned will offer invaluable insights that conference attendees can take back to their stations in developing this important audio platform. And why she believes that “everything circles back to this core idea that this is not about repurposing content. This is about understanding the medium and creating specifically for the medium.”

REGISTER NOW! Take advantage of early bird pricing and register today for the Hispanic Radio Conference. Staying in Miami? Book now for special room rates at the Intercontinental at Doral. Only a limited number of rooms available, so book NOW! We care about your safety and comfort. We have arranged to conduct the conference in a larger than usual capacity conference room at the hotel in order to provide maximum space and social distancing for those who are more comfortable spread out. And read here for how the Intercontinental has strengthened procedures designed to give you greater confidence and protection throughout all of the hotel’s facilities.

Now, Christian and Reed are selling nearly all of their TV stations, along with the four radio stations they own, too. Kalil & Co. is the broker of record.

After 73 Years, This AM Is Gone For Good

Radio+Television Business Report
3 years 10 months ago

As 1999 came to a close, Cumulus Media spent $41 million to acquire four FMs and an AM serving California’s Central Coast and two FMs and an AM in Eugene-Springfield, Ore.

The Golden State AM that came in the McDonald Media Group buy first signed on the air in 1948, and from the mid-1960s through 1980 was a profitable MOR station typical of the times. But, times change. By 2000 it was locally programmed Oldies “1450 The Boomer.” In 2010, it was an affiliate of the “True Oldies Channel.” By the time January 2013 ended, its first weeks as one of the first CBS Sports Radio affiliates had been seen.

Now, the station is all but a memory. Cumulus on July 23 surrendered its license to the FCC.

Radio+Television Business Report
3 years 10 months ago

Until now, the TuneIn audio service — and its globally used app found in everything from exercise equipment to smartphones and smart speakers — was somewhat limited in its domestic radio streaming offerings.

The reason: iHeartMedia and Audacy, formerly Entercom, found it best to go their own way by funneling all who wished to stream their over-the-air stations on proprietary platforms iHeartRadio and what was Radio.com, respectively.

Now, iHeart has changed its tune.

WideOrbit Revamps Its C-Suite

Radio+Television Business Report
3 years 10 months ago

WideOrbit, known for its broadcast TV and radio inventory and revenue workflow management products, has initiated a round of executive promotions designed to “better align with, and better serve” its clients.

This sees its President and EVP/Sales stepping down from a role he’s held for 20 years.

Bruce Roberts will remain with WideOrbit, however, as a “mentor to WideOrbit managers,” and as an advisor to WideOrbit founder and CEO Eric Mathewson.

Roberts will also maintain his role as “a significant shareholder of WideOrbit.”

The departure results in Tim Swift adding the role of President to his Chief Operating Officer duties. He’ll continue to focus on improving operational efficiency and “ensuring WideOrbit continues to provide customers with best-in-class support and service,” the company said.

Swift joined WideOrbit in 2018 as VP Integrations after serving as a Controller at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City and as Director of Business Analytics at owner Bonneville International.

Concurrently, Toni Coonce will take on the role of Executive Vice President of Sales for WideOrbit. Coonce joined WideOrbit in 2006 as a TV Account Executive, and later served in the roles of Director of Sales/TV and Vice President of Sales/TV.

Other promotions at WideOrbit see Dave Aston as SVP/National Sales; Rick Dorn as VP/Local Sales; and SVP Don Durand shifting to WideOrbit’s Product division while continuing to consult on International Sales.

Furthermore, Senior Director Megan Tobin has been promoted to Chief Marketing Officer, as Jeff Greenfield has been hired to serve as SVP/Buy Side. He’s the founder and COO of C3 Metrics.

“Bruce’s contribution to both WideOrbit management and revenue growth has been immense,” Mathewson said. “There is no doubt that without Bruce’s sales expertise, charisma, and patience, WideOrbit would not be nearly as successful an organization. Thankfully, we have a talented and deep bench of managers at WideOrbit, and we congratulate those taking on new roles to help WideOrbit clients as we continue to focus on providing our clients world-class software and support.”

Solk Slides Up To Top Audacy/Chicago Programming Slot

Radio+Television Business Report
3 years 10 months ago

He began his programming career in 1983 at “The Loop,” specifically WLUP-FM 97.9 in Chicago. Not bad for a 21-year-old who’d go on to program former Adult Alternative KFOG-FM in San Francisco, launched Sports Talker WMVP-AM in Chicago in 1994, and would create crosstown WDRV-FM “The Drive” under Bonneville International ownership in 1997.

Now, Greg Solk is being put in charge of the programming and operations for an entire group of stations in the nation’s third-largest market.

Audacy (formerly Entercom) has promoted Solk to VP of Programming and Operations for its Chicago market, effective August 1.

In this role, Solk will oversee programming and operations strategy for WXRT-FM, WBMX-FM “104.3 JAMS,” WUSN-FM “US99,” WBBM-AM & WCFS-FM, WSCR-AM “The Score” and WBBM-FM “B96.”

Solk has served as Brand Manager of “93XRT,” since 2017. A search for his successor is on.

“Greg has been an invaluable partner who is respected and appreciated by his team at WXRT, across Audacy, and throughout the industry,” said Rachel Williamson, Regional President and Market Manager for Audacy in Chicago. “He has been influential in the success of many of the biggest brands across Chicago and I could not be more excited to promote him into this enhanced role overseeing our Chicago programming strategy.”

Solk said, “The past four and a half years at WXRT have been among the most rewarding of my career — especially the opportunity to work alongside legendary talents. Along with so many others behind the scenes, this team returned WXRT to the top echelon of our great city’s broadcast properties. Now, I look forward to continuing to work with Rachel and our group’s superb brand/programming leaders. Together we will do our best to continue enlightening, entertaining and delighting the millions we serve on our airwaves and through our growing digital channels.”

Solk entered the Audacy family through its tax-free merger with CBS Radio; in February 2017 he was named PD/OM of WXRT and the former WJMK-FM. Before that, he served as SVP/Programming for Hubbard Broadcasting, working across all seven of its markets.
