Upcoming opportunities for new stations
Because of various rulemaking and other activities, there should soon be some opportunities to obtain a new broadcast station. REC has prepared a very brief overview of each opportunity. Full Service Commercial FM-Auction 109
138 vacant FM allotments in various parts of the country and 4 AM allotments in the St. Louis area will be available for auction. Short form filing window: April 28~May 11, 2021.
Non-commercial Educational Reserved Band
Predicted to take place in late 2020 or early 2021... subject to delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
New full-service/full-power noncommercial educational stations in the band 88.1~91.9 MHz and major changes to existing stations. Stations must be a minimum class A (100w @ 30m HAAT) and can go up to a full 50 or 100 kW based on the part of the country where the station will be located.
Low Power FM - Third Generation
Predicted to take place in late 2021 or early 2022... subject to delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
New Low Power FM stations and major changes to existing LPFMs. Stations can use any available channel in the 88.1~107.9 MHz band and must meet the requirements for LPFM stations.
Alaska Class D Non-commercial Educational Stations
Available now on a first-come, first-served basis. No need to wait for a filing window.
New broadcast stations operating up to 99 watts at 30 meters HAAT. Stations must be physically located in the state of Alaska.
