FAQ: Can a translator carrying an LPFM station have a power higher than the LPFM station itself?

A translator that is carrying an LPFM station may operate at a power that exceeds that of an LPFM station (100 watts at 30 meters height above average terrain (HAAT)) subject to the necessary contour protections needed for the location and channel that the translator is located at. Overall, translators are limited to an equivilent of:

  • 250 watts at 32 meters HAAT at locations east of the Mississippi River and in California south of 40 degrees latitude.
  • 250 watts at 107 meters HAAT at locations west of the Mississippi River except in California south of 40 degrees latitude.
